Jane Austen Lived a Quiet, Single Life—Or Did She?

Tradition holds that Jane Austen lived a contemplative, unmarried life. But what if she wed a man as passionate and intelligent as she—and the marriage remained secret for 200 years?

The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen resolves the biggest mystery of Austen’s life—the “lost years” of her twenties—of which historians know virtually nothing.

• Why the enduring rumors of a lost love or tragic affair?

• Why did the vivacious Austen prematurely "put on the garb of middle age” and retire to write her books?

• Why, after her death, did her beloved sister destroy her letters and journals?

The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen trilogy answers these questions through a riveting love affair based on the history of the times and the details of Austen's own life.

"A skillful portrayal of an early nineteenth-century literary icon takes this historical romance on an imaginative journey of the soul." —Foreword CLARION Reviews, 4 stars

"Hemingway captures the energy of the times, while also writing with the irony and sly humor of Austen herself." —Blueink Starred Review

"An enjoyable novel in an imaginative, well-researched series." —Kirkus Reviews

"Hemingway, with the lightest touch, builds up a thoroughly convincing alternative history." —Jane Austen’s Regency World

The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen Volume II edition by Collins Hemingway Literature Fiction eBooks

From precise and rigorous research ensuring accurate historical events surrounding Jane Austen’s world, Mr. Hemingway takes the reader deftly on an imaginative journey through this iconic women’s young married life. Moving from Hampshire's English pastoral setting to the bustle of London streets, and back again, we are transformed into Jane’s world.

By using the real Jane Austen as the protagonist instead of a made-up character, Mr. Hemingway is given liberty to touch on important topics that concerned Jane personally, and which she inserted into her own novels; slave trade practices within the British Empire, religion and creation, science and industry, and the order of society in which she lived.

This compelling and skillfully written novel captures the essence of the times from an insular world of the English countryside, among mansion-house staff and country fools and snobs, to inside London’s Houses of Parliament where divided rulers of Britain make life-altering decisions and where an activist-minded Jane, through Mr. Hemingway's resourceful vision, finds raw material to write her brilliant novels a decade later.

Love the story
As well written as the first one, with more plot elements! As with Volume I, I can't wait for the next installment. Surely there won't just be three???
Very well written book. Extensive subject matter well researched and presented . It depicts the era of that time eloquently and realistically. A pleasure to curl up with.
Hemingway delivers again with volume II. Thoughtful, entertaining and appealing to readers beyond the circle of Miss Austen's fans. Rich character development balanced with action provides a pleasant read. Moral topics that are relevant to issues of the day provide an intellectual read. Well done!
This second installment continues the love story of Jane and Ashton as they settle into married life. Jane faces the challenge of running a household while trying to please her new husband and his demanding mother's expectations. The historical events woven into this love story add another layer of complexity and drama to this period piece.
I like this series, which combines Austen, romance, science, and faith. Lots of true history is intertwined with the story. The scenes with various scientists of the day are my favorites.
That “The Marriage of Miss Jane Austen, Vol 2” is a delightful story filled with dynamic, engaging characters is enough reason to read it. But the novel also weaves fascinating historical detail into a rich tapestry of early 19th century England. Issues of the day that related to social justice and global conflict project forward in ways that remain relevant to our own times, and this book provides thoughtful perspective to the interconnectedness of both eras.

Jane and Ashton's adjustments to married life are woven throughout. The interpersonal intimacies of this 19th century couple are tender and thoughtful. Hemingway's depictions of their interactions with each other and with historic characters allow the reader to feel part of the social settings and conversations that take place in the story. The continuation, from volume I, of Jane's letter writing to her sister highlights just how expressive and comprehensive fine letter writing can be. In the face of new experiences and challenges, Jane's character grows in deep and thoughtful ways. Her encounter with a publisher perhaps foretells her future. Can't wait for volume III to find out.
